Jersey City Pride: Why It's the Only Pride That Waits for August

Everyone else's Pride flags come down in July. Jersey City's whole celebration hasn't even started yet. While most of the country treats June as the finish line, Jersey City formally observes August as its Pride Month — which makes its flagship festival one of the last big outdoor Prides of the summer, not the first.

A Different Calendar, On Purpose

The Jersey City Pride Festival lands in late August, run by the nonprofit Jersey City Pride, which also produces year-round LGBTQ+ programming beyond the single-day event. Rather than competing for attention in the June rush, Jersey City claims its own month entirely — which gives its Pride season room to breathe, and gives the city something to celebrate once everyone else's confetti has been swept up.

Big, and Getting Bigger

This isn't a small local gathering — in 2025, more than 22,000 people attended the festival, with thousands more taking part across 40-plus Pride Month events citywide. The festival takes over Newark Avenue and the Grove Street PATH Plaza in the heart of Downtown Jersey City, opening with a Pride March before the day turns into a full street festival with live performances and vendors.

Show Your True Colors

The Jersey City Pride Festival's 2026 theme — "Show Your True Colors — Now More Than Ever" — leans directly into the current moment: a call to visibility and authenticity at a time when LGBTQ+ progress is facing renewed pushback nationally. It's both a celebration and a statement, which feels like the right combination for a Pride that's confident enough to throw its party on its own schedule.

The March Comes First

Before the festival turns into a full street party, the Pride March brings together community members, families, allies, and organizations from across the region — open to all ages, and framed around honoring LGBTQ+ history rather than just kicking off a good time. The party comes after the point is made.
