North Jersey Pride: Maplewood's Massive Family-Friendly Bash

Jersey doesn't always get credit for throwing a good party, but North Jersey Pride would like a word. Every June, Memorial Park in Maplewood turns into one of the largest free Pride festivals in the whole tri-state region — and it's been building that reputation for over a decade.

A Decade-Plus in the Making

North Jersey Pride, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2013, and its flagship festival has grown into a genuine Essex County institution. It's held annually on the second Sunday in June at Memorial Park in Maplewood, drawing over 10,000 visitors most years — no small feat for a free, all-ages event.

Not Just a Festival — A Whole Weekend

North Jersey Pride doesn't stop at one afternoon. Pride Weekend spans Friday through Sunday, spread across Maplewood and neighboring South Orange — a free outdoor dance party, an adults-only nightlife night, and then the big daytime festival to close it out. It's the kind of programming that says: we're not fitting queer joy into a two-hour window.

Built for Everyone, On Purpose

The festival's Rainbow Kids Zone — complete with inflatables, obstacle courses, and an interactive kids stage — makes this one of the more explicitly family-friendly Prides in the region. North Jersey Pride has also partnered with the local nonprofit Together We Bloom to strengthen disability inclusion and accessibility at the festival, extending the event's values of equality and community to disabled and neurodivergent attendees specifically, not as an afterthought.

What's There

More than 100 merchant vendors, a full food court, live music on the main stage, and a genuinely massive lawn to spread a blanket on. Admission is free, kept that way by community donations — this is a festival that runs on the same "showing up for each other" energy that built queer mutual aid networks in the first place, just with better snacks.

Rep the Weekend

A day at Memorial Park means a lot of walking, a lot of sun, and hopefully a lot of running into people you know. Queerky's caps and stickers are festival-day staples — easy to spot your friend group across the lawn, easy to hand off to someone who compliments your fit.
